Questions

How it counts, how it works, and what happens to your voice.

Speaking speed is counted in words per minute. We divide the words you say by the whole length of your take, silences included, which is how Exprea’s own analysis does it. That means pauses lower the number, and that is deliberate: pauses are part of how a talk sounds.

Talk about anything for a minute, then read where you land. Under 110 is slow, 110 to 160 is conversational, and above 160 is fast. These are descriptions, not scores, and what suits you depends on the room, the topic and the listener.

The count comes from your browser’s speech recognition, so treat it as a close estimate, not a lab measurement.

  1. Press record. Allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  2. Talk for a minute. Describe your morning, your job, a place you like. Anything.
  3. Read your pace. See your words per minute and where it falls.

There is no single right number. We call 110 to 160 words per minute conversational, and what suits you depends on the room and the material. Our article on speaking rate goes through the research.

Pace moves with how you feel and how familiar the material is. Try the test twice, once on a topic you know well and once on a new one.

It is an estimate. The words come from your browser’s speech recognition, which can miss or misread some, and the pace is words divided by the whole take, silences included.

Pause at the end of each sentence instead of speaking slower all the way through, then test again.
