AI Speech Coach or Toastmasters? What Each One Is Good For

By Noam Shemla · Community & Practice

We make Exprea, which combines an AI speech coach with live sessions, so we have an interest in this question. What follows is our honest view, with Toastmasters' own figures, checked on 25 September 2026.

What Toastmasters gives you

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit network of speaking clubs, meeting in person and online. A typical meeting follows a set structure: members give prepared speeches from the Pathways learning programme, others give short impromptu talks in Table Topics, and every speech gets a spoken and written evaluation from another member. Members take turns in meeting roles such as Timer and General Evaluator.

Its great strength is people. You speak to a real audience, week after week, and you learn as much from evaluating others as from being evaluated.

What it costs. International dues are $72 USD every six months, plus a one-time $25 new-member fee, according to Toastmasters' own membership FAQ. Clubs can add their own local dues on top, which vary from club to club.

What an AI speech coach gives you

An AI coach listens to a recording of you and measures it: how fast you speak, how many filler words you use, how long you pause, how much your pitch moves. You can record at 11 at night, take it again ten minutes later, and compare the two.

Its great strength is repetition with numbers. A human evaluator hears one speech and gives you three points. A measured recording shows you that your pace climbs every time you reach the part you are least sure of, and it shows you that on every take.

Where each one falls short

Toastmasters gives you one speech slot every few weeks, and the feedback depends on who is evaluating that night. It does not measure anything, so progress is a feeling rather than a number.

An AI coach has never been in a room with you. It cannot tell you that the audience leaned in, or that your joke landed, or that you lost them in the second minute. And it is easy to stop opening an app. Nobody notices when you skip.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Toastmasters if what you need most is a regular audience and a friendly place to be nervous, if there is a club near you that you like, and if you want the lowest cost for live practice.

Choose an AI coach if you want to practise a specific talk many times before a deadline, if you like to track numbers, or if your schedule makes a fixed weekly meeting hard.

Many people are best served by both: measured practice alone, and a live room to try it in. That combination is exactly what we built Exprea to be, with an AI coach for your recordings and weekly live sessions online and in Dublin. It costs more than Toastmasters dues if you want every live session (Pro is €49 a month), and less if the AI coach is mostly what you need (Basic is €19 a month, after a free first week).

If you already belong to a Toastmasters club you love, stay. Use an AI coach between meetings to practise the speech you are about to give.
